WHO'S THIS JEFF GUY ANYWAY?
Jeff Keithline has appeared and recorded with an amazingly diverse group of Artists. Tom Waits, Canned Heat, Tower of Power Horns, Dave Mason, Silverado, Jeff Pevar, James Cotton, Bob Moses, Men and Volts, Mandolin Master Bruce Millard, Alternative Guitar Hero Kevin Salem, Legendary Rock Producer Richie Cordell, Mambo Sons, and Jazz / Fusion Giant Larry Young, to name a few. Jeff has had a single in the Billboard Hot 100 and toured with Steppenwolf (in the same year!). In 1990, Jeff wrote and recorded songs for the indie cult classic "Lucky Guy", the first release under his own name. He then went into semi-retirement, and settled in Providence RI, emerging from time to time to play bass on friends' projects but focusing on his new role as Husband and Father. Jeff continued to write, his songs evolving to reflect the variety of music and life that had always been his musical identity. "Jeff Now" is a collection of brand new songs that take all of these influences and meld them, along with Jeff's own unique humor and sensibilities, into a New World of Pop Possibilities.
"JEFF NOW" ACCORDING TO THE MAN HIMSELF:
"The new cd revolves around the scenario in which I, after a 10 year period of focusing on raising a family with Liz, began to venture back into the creative musical world. I had been, over that period of time, semi-active as a bass player on various projects but it was two things in particular that got my own creative juices flowing (and flowing etc). Firstly; my involvement with Tom, Scott, and Mike in the Mambo Sons, which was my first real band performing experience in a long time. The music and camaraderie were so much fun that I began to realize how much I had missed it all. Secondly, I became inspired to put together a live performance of the great Bob Dylan album "Blond on Blond". I made phone calls, asking some old friends to do it with me, and things began to take shape. But then something unforeseen began to happen. As I, with guitar in hand, started to learn the songs on the LP, I found myself working on different songs, songs that were new, and these new songs evolved into the 'Jeff Now' record. I made demos on my old 4-track and called Ace engineer and Producer Chris Lannon (Peter Wolf, Aimee Mann, Carly Simon, to name a few), with whom I had recorded my "Lucky Guy" EP in 1990. I then contacted the two guys who I knew would provide the foundation and feel for the tunes, the always-excellent Mike Hayden, on drums, and the Master of Strings Bruce Millard, on guitars etc. We recorded the rhythm tracks at Renaissance Recording in Boston in November 2000 and, over the next few months, worked at Chris' studio, The Research Kitchen. As we added tracks, played by some of the most talented musicians I have ever worked with, the recordings took shape, and after being mixed by Chris and mastered by the wonderful Steve Meyer of ESR Studios, resulted in what I call "Jeff Now".
When I began writing these songs, I wanted to just let them come out. I had no preconception about what they should sound like or what the lyrics should be about. I hoped that I would end up with a collection of tunes that reflected whatever was bouncing around my brain at the time. That also was my approach during the overdubbing, we gave some basic direction to the players but mostly just turned them loose, we wanted to get an immediate reaction to the tunes. Then Chris and I, assisted by Scott Bressler, wrestled and blended these amazing tracks. The end product of this inspired collaborative process exceeded even my hopes and expectations. I don't know if I will perform these songs anytime soon. I am looking forward to the new Mambo Sons recording and gigs. Also I have a bunch of new tunes that have been knocking on my skull, asking to be let out, so I'll just follow the muse. I know that wherever it takes me will be both surprising, interesting, and, hopefully, fun." - Jeff Keithline
